P.T. Kao Indonesia Chemicals Receives Responsible Care Award

May. 17, 2010

In December 2009, P.T. Kao Indonesia Chemicals (KIC) received the Silver Award for Responsible Care from Komite Nasional Responsible Care? Indonesia (KN-RCI), Indonesia´s organization for voluntary commitment to Responsible Care. KIC manufactures and markets a wide variety of surfactants for industrial use.

In August 2008, in support of Responsible Care activities worldwide, Kao top executives signed the Declaration of Support for the Responsible Care Global Charter. Responsible Care activities refer to the self-monitoring of environmental and safety issues in the chemical manufacturing industry, specifically promoting activities preserving the global environment and ensuring stakeholder safety at all levels, from development of chemical materials through manufacturing, logistics, consumption and disposal.

From 2007, KIC has been lauded for its efforts in reducing carbon dioxide emissions-a major factor in global warming-through, for example, switching from heavy fuel oil to natural gas. The 2009 Silver Award recognized this achievement along with KIC´s obtaining of ISO 9001 (Quality Control Management System), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) and OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System), and improvements through the PDCA cycle. Finally, KIC´s award also reflected the company´s aggressive promotion of the GHS (Global Harmonize System)-a global standard for chemical product labeling-not only within the corporation, but also throughout Indonesia itself.

KIC prefers not to rest on its laurels, instead viewing the Silver Award as further incentive to continue striving for environmental and safety improvements, as well as to contributing to the promotion of sustainable development in Indonesia.

Kao aims at “enriching lives, in harmony with nature” while promoting Responsible Care activities worldwide.
