International Convention on Quality Control Circles Gold Award

In October 2009, two teams from Pilipinas Kao, Inc. shared the Gold Award at the International Convention on Quality Control Circles as representatives of the Philippines. Pilipinas Kao was established in 1977 and currently produces a wide variety of oleochemical products based on palm oil, such as fatty alcohol, refined glycerin and tertiary amines, delivering to customers within the Kao Group and worldwide.

The International Convention on Quality Control Circles provides an international platform for competitive presentation of quality improvement efforts based on QC circle activities at the factory level. Member nations have taken turns hosting the annual event, beginning with the 1978 inaugural convention in Tokyo. The 2009 event was held on Cebu Island in the Philippines from October 22 to 25. In total, 133 QC circles representing nine Southeast Asian countries participated, splitting into smaller related groups to showcase their recent workplace improvements.

As representatives of Pilipinas Kao´s team activities, the Quality Assurance Group presented “FUSION,” QC activities targeting the complete elimination of all-purpose reagent inventory, and the Tertiary Amines Manufacturing Group unveiled “AMINATORS 2,” aimed at reducing the use of anti-foaming agents through the introduction of exhaust gas treatment equipment. These two teams worked tirelessly to improve the environment and reduce hidden waste found in daily work processes. This award recognized the quality improvements achieved through diligent efforts on the part of employees.

Incident-free Award from Philippine Department of Labor and Employment

Pilipinas Kao also received the Safety Recognition Award from the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment in November 2009. This award was received in recognition of Pilipinas Kao´s milestone of an accident- and incident-free three-year period from May 2006 to May 2009. Pilipinas Kao´s collaboration with Kao Japan, uniting employees to enhance safety measures and review existing regulations, as reflected in the QC circles, formed the basis for receiving the award.

Pilipinas Kao views these two awards as momentum for revitalizing safety activities and underscoring quality improvements and monozukuri (development and manufacturing of products), further satisfying customers´ needs and expectations.
