Background & challenges

Aging social infrastructure and shortage of civil engineers

The aging of social infrastructure has become a serious problem, and  it was reported that by 2033, approximately 60% of roads will be more than 50 years old. Furthermore, while periodic pavement inspections and the establishment of road maintenance methods are required in line with revisions to the Road Traffic Act, etc., the construction industry is faced with another serious problem stemming from a shortage of civil engineers who play a key role in the maintenance of our social infrastructure.

Trend towards the realization of a sustainable society for the future

In recent years, momentum was building behind movements to realize a sustainable society that looks ahead to the future, such as the conservation of marine resources by reducing plastic waste and the development of safe, secure, and resilient social infrastructure.

Effective use of recycled PET waste in high durability asphalt modifier
NEWTLAC 5000 series

Using waste PET (discarded Polyethylene Terephthalate), Kao developed NEWTLAC 5000 series, a high durability pavement modifier, and established a technology to promote positive recycling. NEWTLAC 5000 is a unique asphalt modifier developed by Kao that combines pavement durability enhancement with waste plastic recycling.

Reduction of PET waste, Reduction of microplastics, Reduction of asphalt

Approx. 40% of recovered PET can be effectively recycled in NEWTLAC

Approximately 4,500 PET bottles can be reused to construct 1,000 sq.yds of paved road surface

Chopped waste PET, Conversion into an asphalt modifier through a chemical reaction, Mixed with paving material

Chopped waste PET, Conversion into an asphalt modifier through a chemical reaction, Mixed with paving material

SOLUTION

Easy to achieve extended service life

High durability achieved by adding approx. 0.2-0.3% weight of total mix

Pavement fuel resistance

Pavement fuel resistance

Polymeric asphalt modifier that provides improved resistance to fuel damage and pavement deformation, making it ideal for commercial parking lots & truck stops
