Kao has succeeded in uniformly dispersing CNF in resins and solvents by modifying the hydrophilic CNF surface to a hydrophobic surface using its core technology of interface control. The technology involving interface control is called the "dual graft system" and is based on structural forecasting using quantum chemical calculations.
Using this "dual graft system" two kinds of modification groups selected based on wettability and steric repulsion are bonded on the CNF surface. Modifying the CNF surface to a hydrophobic surface utilizing small modification group weight, enables the development of the natural properties of CNF.
LUNAFLEX®, a new material developed by Kao, uses interface control technology to achieve uniform dispersion in resins and solvents, which was considered difficult to apply. We customize the appropriate modification group for the resin or solvent in which CNF is mixed(blended), and the wettability steric repulsion is controlled so that the CNF and resin can be easily combined.Modified CNF can be custom-desined according to customer specifications (resins and solvents).
