Kao has developed a water-based coating agent that utilizes the surface hydrophobicity technology of CNF (Cellulose Nanofiber) to create a surface on which objects slide off, thereby suppressing various types of adhesion.
What is LUNAFLOW®?
LUNAFLOW® is a coating agent that can create a long-lasting slippery surface simply by application, and it can maintain this slippery surface over an extended period. It is a water-based coating agent that is environmentally friendly and safe for workers to use on site, as it does not contain organic solvents.
In our development, we took inspiration from the pitcher plant, which uses its slippery surface to trap and capture insects. The interior surface of the pitcher plant is covered with a lubricating fluid, and the surface that mimics it is called the "slippery surface". Kao focused on this structure.

The hydrophobized CNF ensures strong retention of the lubricant.
Generally, lubricants (hydrophobic) do not mix well with CNF (hydrophilic).

That is an environmentally friendly water-based coating agent, where hydrophobized CNF is emulsified in water, encapsulating lubricating oil in a spherical state.
The slipperiness persists for a long time.
When LUNAFLOW® is applied to the surface of the target object, it forms a layered film with a structure resembling a sphere. This allows hydrophobized CNF to retain lubricating oil and continuously release small amounts of lubricating oil, enabling the maintenance of a lubricious surface over an extended period of repeated use.
