CNF Composite Material for CFRP “LUNAFLEX® R Series”

Supplied as a resin dispersion with uniformly dispersed CNF

Appearance of LunaFlex® R Series CNF composite material

Kao’s LUNAFLEX® R Series is a resin dispersion in which modified cellulose nanofibers (CNF) are uniformly dispersed in thermosetting resins such as epoxy and acrylic resins. Because the products are supplied as resin dispersions, they can be directly incorporated intocustomers’ formulations.

Features of the LUNAFLEX® R Series

When added to resins, the LUNAFLEX® R Series is expected to improve elastic modulus, strength, and elongation. Potential applications include structural components, adhesives, and otherhigh-performance composite materials.

"Strength resin"

Improved Balance Between ElasticModulus and Elongation

1. Enhanced Mechanical Performancethrough Improvements in Elastic Modulus and Elongation

<Tensile Test of Cured Resin Films>

Stress-strain curves showing improved modulus, strength, and elongation of resin with CNF addition

Test Method: Test specimen: Dumbbell-shaped No.7 type (thickness: 150 μm) / Resin: Bis-A epoxy / Curing agent: Imidazole-based

By forming a network structure within the resin, CNF is expected to improve both elastic modulus and elongation simultaneously, contributing to enhanced mechanical performance.

"Strength CFRP"

Enhanced Strength and Durability of CFRP

1. Effect of CNF Addition in CFRPComposites

<Effect of CNF Addition in Various CFRP Molding Processes>

*Evaluation supported by Prof. Ogihara’s Laboratory, Tokyo University of Science

Summary of strength and durability improvements in CFRP with CNF addition

In various CFRP molding processes, the addition of CNF is expected to provide a reinforcing effect on the resin matrix.

2. Suppression of 90°Crack Formation

<Comparison of the Number of Cracks Generated During Tensile Testing>

*Evaluation supported by Prof. Ogihara’s Laboratory, Tokyo University of Science

Comparison of 90° crack suppression in CFRP with and without CNF addition

The CNF nano-network reinforces the resin matrix and is expected to suppress crack initiation and propagation.

3. Improved Interlaminar FractureToughness

<Comparison of Interlaminar Fracture Toughness by DCB Testing>

*Evaluation supported by Prof. Ogihara’s Laboratory, Tokyo University of Science

Graph showing improved Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP with increasing CNF content

The addition of CNF is expected to improve the toughness of the resin matrix, thereby enhancing interlaminar fracture toughness.

4. Damage Suppression

<Comparison of Damage Evolution over Time Using the Acoustic Emission (AE) Method>

*Evaluation supported by Prof. Ogihara’s Laboratory, Tokyo University of Science

Comparison of damage behavior in CFRP without CNF and with 2 wt% CNF

The addition of CNF is expected to suppress damage development within the resin matrix, thereby contributing to improved strength and durability.
