CNF Solvent Dispersions for OpticalFilms “LUNAFLEX® S Series”

Supplied as a solvent dispersion for use in a wide range of applications

Appearance of LUNAFLEX® S Series CNF solvent dispersion

Kao’s LUNAFLEX® S Series is a solvent dispersion in which modified cellulose nanofibers (CNF) are uniformly dispersed in an organic solvent. Because it is supplied as a solvent dispersion, it can be readily diluted with a wide variety of resins and solvents for use invarious formulations.

Properties of “LUNAFLEX® S Series“for Optical Films

When diluted with resins or solvents, the LUNAFLEX® S Series is expected to provide not only rheology control, improved dimensional stability, and enhanced mechanical properties, but also control of optical properties. These characteristics make the product suitablefor potential applications in optical films, including films for displays.

"Birefringence reduction"

Zero Birefringence While MaintainingTransparency

1. Achieving Zero Birefringence

<Comparison of Birefringence>

Graph showing reduced birefringence in PMMA with CNF addition

<Comparison of Transparency>

Visual comparison of transparency with and without CNF addition

Test Method: Measurement instrument: KOBRA retardation measurement system / Hot-stretching temperature: 120°C / Film thickness: 100 μm

By reducing birefringence to zero, improvements can be expected in issues such as color non-uniformity, rainbow-like unevenness, reduced contrast, image blurring, polarization dependence.
Potential applications include optical films and other optical materials.

"Birefringence enhancement"

Enhancement and Introduction ofBirefringence in Resins

1. Enhancement of Resin Birefringence

<Comparison of Birefringence>

Graph showing increased birefringence in PVA with CNF addition

<Wavelength Dependence of Optical Performance>

Graph showing wavelength-dependent birefringence of CNF-containing film

Test Method: Measurement instrument: KOBRA retardation measurement system / Hot-stretching temperature: 120°C / Film thickness: 100 μm

Increasing birefringence enables a larger optical retardation to be achieved, which may allow for thinner film designs.

2. Birefringence Can Be EasilyIntroduced into Non-Birefringent Resins

<Comparison of Retardation>

Graph showing birefringence imparted to polystyrene by CNF addition

<Transparency>

Illustration of CNF film preparation by casting and drying a CNF dispersion

Test Method: Measurement instrument: KOBRA retardation measurement system / Hot-stretching temperature: 120° C / Film thickness: 100 μm

Potential Applications

  • Hard-coating materials
  • Optical materials
  • Other related applications

By adding the LUNAFLEX® S Series to a resin, birefringence can be introduced, enabling the development of films that exhibit optical retardation.
